Devon Celtic Combat has been preserving and teaching authentic Devon wrestling techniques for over three decades. Founded in 2020 by Master Richard Nunn, our academy stands as a testament to the rich martial heritage of the Westcountry.
We are dedicated to maintaining the traditional collar-and-elbow wrestling methods that have been passed down through generations of Devon wrestlers. Our training emphasises not only physical technique but also the historical and cultural significance of these ancient fighting arts.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced martial artist, our welcoming community and structured curriculum will help you develop your skills whilst connecting with centuries of Westcountry tradition.
We believe that traditional martial arts training develops more than physical strength—it builds character, discipline, and respect.
Our teaching methods honour the past whilst remaining relevant to modern practitioners, ensuring that Devon Wrestling remains a living, breathing tradition rather than merely a historical curiosity.
Because it's one of the oldest, most honest, and most complete forms of martial expression. Whether for self-defense, athleticism, cultural connection, or personal growth, it offers value that modern gyms and commercial martial arts often overlook.
Practical grappling skills: Many folk wrestling styles like Devon and Cornish wrestling emphasize throws, clinches, trips, and sweeps —core fundamentals of real-world hand-to-hand combat.
Cross-training value: Westcountry wrestling often complements other martial arts (like BJJ, MMA, judo, or striking arts) by improving balance, takedowns, and control.
Wrestling is hard. Training builds grit, pain tolerance, and focus.
Many folk styles emphasize ritual, respect, and emotional control, grounded in cultural tradition.
We offer a comprehensive range of classes designed to accommodate practitioners of all ages and experience levels. Our structured curriculum ensures progressive development whilst maintaining the authenticity of traditional techniques.
