Western Times, South Zeal wrestling: Cann as umpire (1848)
SOUTH ZEAL, In the Parish of SOUTH TAWTON, DEVON. A GRAND WRESTLING MATCH will take place at the Kings Arms Inn, on TUESDAY, the 11th of July, and following days, for THIRTY POUNDS, Which will be played for the old Devonshire style, and open to all Players, with the exception of Messrs. Gundry and Chappel. Each Standard will receive Five Shillings, and Five Shillings added for every man he throws after, up to the above prizes. Competent persons will be chosen as Triers, and Mr. Abraham Cann, will be in attendance as Umpire. Deserving Players, if unfortunate, will meet with every encouragement. All Players are expected to be on the ground the First day at [o’]clock. Further information may be obtained of Mr. HOLLAWAY, Oxenham Quarry, or of Mr. KNAPMAN, the King’s Arms, South Zeal.
