EXETER AND EXWICK WRESTLING MATCHES. The present is the first attempt in this hamlet at anything extensive in the way of wrestling. The prizes, including the championship, amount to twenty guineas. The field opposite Bailer’s Arms has been selected for the trials.

Moore, of Bow, and Stone, Crediton, however, to the appearance of the gathering, some “all-comers” aspect; these men entered on the first day, and afforded some of the best sport the spectators had yet seen. The play of the old school, in which a great amount of vitality has now been superseded, and instead of battling it out with bare legs, competitors are now provided with substantial “padding.” Protected with this the wrestler has little fear of his opponent’s toe. Oliver (Plymouth) was among the foremost to secure a standard easily. Standards booked: Moore (Bow), Back (Exeter), Stone (Crediton), Ford (Exeter), Willis (Exeter), Hawker (Exeter). Skinner (St. Austell) is expected to arrive, also a number of other prize men.
