Exeter Flying Post, Topsham, Totnes, Newton Abbot and Dartmouth wrestling advertisements (1827)
TWENTY-FIVE SOVEREIGNS. FAIR BACK FALLS. TOPSHAM Annual GRAND WRESTLING MATCH, for the above PRIZE, will take place in the Bowling Green of the SALUTATION INN, (subject to such conditions as will then be produced). On Monday and Tuesday, the 9th and 10th day of July next. The play to commence by eight o’clock in the morning of each day. All wrestlers from a distance will be considered. The double play to commence on the second day, precisely at twelve o’clock each day. Topsham, June 22, 1827.
TOTNES, GRAND WRESTLING MATCH. TO be WRESTLED FOR, on MONDAY and TUESDAY, the 16th and 17th of JULY next, the following PRIZES: 20 Sov. the Best Man; 10 Sov. the Second Best Man; 5 Sov. the Third Best Man. Sixteen Standards only to be made, each standard to receive 7s.; the first standard made to receive 5s. extra. Every Standard throwing his man in the double play to receive extra 5s. Players becoming standards will be found Victuals and Lodgings until the match is decided. AN ORDINARY ON THE GROUND. Dated Totnes, June 20th, 1827.
THE NEWTON-ABBOT GRAND WRESTLING MATCH For 50 SOVEREIGNS. TO be WRESTLED FOR, on THURSDAY and FRIDAY, the 19th and 20th of JULY next. Able and impartial Tryers will be chosen. The Play to begin precisely by 11 o’Clock in the Forenoon of each day.
DARTMOUTH GRAND WRESTLING MATCH, for THIRTY SOVEREIGNS, will take place in the NEW GROUND, (a Ring of 80 feet diameter, being turfed for the occasion) on WEDNESDAY, 25th day of JULY next, the play to commence precisely at 2 o’clock in the afternoon.
