Exeter Flying Post, Broadclyst wrestling match report: Wreford first prize (1827)

WRESTLING. The match at Broadclist, commenced on Monday morning. 16 as strong standards as ever stepped into a ring were made. The turn in the double play between James Cann and young Lewis, was a masterly effort, which lasted for 38 minutes, when Lewis was thrown. The brave Wreford, and an equally brave man of the name of Webber next stepped into the arena, and a finer specimen of pure Devonshire was scarcely ever exhibited to the delighted eyes of a thickly surrounded ring. It was a rich treat for 35 minutes, when the masterly and scientific Wreford threw his opponent a famous turn. In the third round, Wreford threw Bradford in 10 minutes, and Fry fell to Underdown; it was now Wreford and Underdown for the best prize. In 3 minutes Wreford threw his opponent a most tremendous fall, gaining the first prize of £7.; Underdown being awarded the second of £3, and Fry, the third of 30s.
