  • Devon Wrestling Exeter Jordan Severe play

GRAND WRESTLING MATCH. On Monday last a numerous and respectable company assembled at the Blue Ball, Heavitree. Jordan and Wolland.—This contest was one of the most striking of the day, from the contrast of the men—Jordan, being several inches above six feet, and Wolland not many more above five feet—and the length of time which it took the inelegant and gentle giant Jordan to throw his puny opponent, being no less than seven minutes. (Cries “don’t you kick him, you great beast, throw him without.”)

We must also mention Avery and Smith, whose very spirited and proper play excited great applause, the latter being thrown after a contest of nearly an hour. The first prize, of 12 sovereigns, was won by Jordan, after a severe and scientific turn with Avery. The second prize, of six sovereigns, was awarded to Avery, who was then matched against Webber, the Exeter baker, whom he threw at the end of 20 minutes, and the latter obtained the third prize of three sovereigns. Harvey, for throwing Trace, received the fourth prize of two sovereigns.

The Honiton annual Wrestling Match took place on Wednesday week. Wm. Toogood, of Awliscombe, gained the first prize; Cunnet, of Gittisham, the second, and Miller, of Combrawleigh, the third.
