Bell’s Life, Leeds prizes and Eagle Tavern single-stick results (1828)
GRAND WRESTLING MATCH AT LEEDS. On Monday last, the whole of the Wrestlers who arrived from London, nineteen in number, appeared on the Race Ground, and excited considerable attention from the commonalty there assembled. On Tuesday the sports commenced, & after three days’ excellent play, the Prizes were thus awarded:—A. Cann 1st, 30l.; James Stone 2d, 20l.; Bell 3d, 15l.; Jordan 4th, 10l.; R. Stone 5th, 7l.; and Roche 6th, 5l.
During the entire of the last week, the elegant and spacious grounds attached to the Eagle Tavern, City-road, presented a scene of fashion and gaiety rarely equalled, in consequence of a previous announcement, that the ancient game of single stick, in the highest state of perfection, would be introduced, in addition to the manly science of wrestling. The prizes amounted to thirty sovereigns. On Thursday the prizes were decided; those for single stick being divided betwixt Lewis, Davis, and Welch; and those for wrestling, betwixt Middleton, Frewick, and Pardue.
Jordan desires us to inform Polkinghorne, who he has heard is in London, that he will be prepared to make a match with him on his return for 100l. aside without shoes.
