Abraham Cann Blue Plaque (2022)
A Blue Plaque commemorative at the site of St Bartholomew Street, Exeter. The only remnants of the Public house is now the foundations for the current properties.
The Blue Plaque reads:
Exeter Civic Society: Abraham Cann
1794-1864
Champion of England
at Devonshire wrestling
Landlord of the Champion’s Arms
public house on this site
1828-1830
DWS Note: Given Cann’s documented successes against both Cornish and Irish wrestlers, it might be more accurate to state that he was Champion of England at Collar-and-Elbow, and Freehold Wrestling during this period.
@devonshirewrestling: 168 years since the death of Abraham Cann (7th April 2022), we gathered at the original site of one of his Pubs: ‘The Champion’s Arms’ in Exeter. We commemorated one of the most significant (and widely forgotten) heroes of the sport with a Blue Plaque, thanks to @exetercivicsoc
