North Devon Journal, Dartmouth wrestling for £50: Hancock of Scilly Islands wins (1886)
Wrestling Devon — The wrestling matches at Dartmouth for prizes amounting £50, were concluded on Friday afternoon, in the enclosure at the Newground, when there was a large attendance, and some very good sport was shown. Mr. Hobson and Mr. Le Morel acted as referees, and Mr. George Stone, Crediton, as judge.
Standards were made by W. Stone, St. Austell; A. James, St. Stephen’s, Cornwall; W. Luckin, St. Austell; and George Whitefield, Exeter. E. Williams, Maldon, and James Martin, Royal Marines, played time and were allowed a draw.
Double standards were obtained by Carlyon, Charlestown; W. Luckin; Hancock, Scilly Islands; T. Stone; and Wellington.
The winners in the triple play were Carlyon, Luckin, and Hancock, and in the fourth play Carlyon and Hancock. In the final trial Hancock and Carlyon had to play off for the first prize, and the former won.
The prizes were awarded as follows: First £15, Hancock, Scilly Islands; second £10, Carlyon, Charlestown, Cornwall; third £6, W. Luckin, St. Austell; fourth £4, E. Williams, Maldon, Cornwall; fifth £2, T. Stone, St. Austell; sixth £1, S. Wellington, Moretonhampstead. The men who had made double standards were awarded £1 each, and those who had made single standards 10s. each.
