Royal Cornwall Gazette, Brecknock Arms wrestling: Truscott wins light weights (1845)
DEVON AND CORNWALL WRESTLING MATCHES. The Devon and Cornwall Wrestling Society resumed their matches on Tuesday afternoon. The display of science was exceedingly good; and the ground selected, which is at the Brecknock Arms Tavern, Camden-town, was in fair condition. The attendance was numerous and respectable.
The principal play was as follows: G. Partridge, of Devon, and J. Clyper, of Cornwall, light weights, entered the ring for a few minutes, and Clyper was thrown by the hanging toe. Tregidder, of Cornwall, and Lucas, of Devon, light weights, were the next competitors; Tregidder threw his man a fair back. John Goodman, of the Bines, a Cornishman, and George Snell, a Devonian, both fine men, heavy weights, and good wrestlers. In this bout a great deal of science was displayed by both men, and two falls took place. In the next turn, Snell went to knock Goodman across the knee, when the soldier caught his opponent by the back lock and threw him, amidst loud cheers.
SECOND PLAY.—LIGHT WEIGHTS. Mildrum, of Cornwall, and Bond, of Devon, two men of equal weight and well matched, showed much toeing, when Bond was thrown.
THIRD PLAY. Truscott quickly threw Mildrum with the fore-hip, and then threw Tregidder again amidst loud cheers.
LIGHT WEIGHTS. First prize — James Truscott, Devon. Second prize — T. Tregidder, Cornwall.
