The Era, Devon and Cornish wrestling at Chalk Farm: Easter meeting (1844)
DEVON AND CORNISH WRESTLING. Easter Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the splendid grounds of Mr. Bowden, Chalk Farm, were filled with spectators, to witness the play between these two celebrated counties.
Smelt and Chappel commenced the single play on Monday; Chappell succumbed to the former. Ball and Gill, of Cornwall, displayed a good bout; Gill put Ball to mother earth.
On Wednesday, the third day, the double play commenced. Lucas and Pigeon ended in Pigeon proving to be of the tumbler breed. Toogood threw Cock. Gill and Roberts made a good display; Roberts on his back. Foster threw Rowe. James Dyer, of Cornwall, and Snell, of Devon, were drawn together, but refused to play in consequence of the intended match between these two men for 20 sovs a-side, which is to take place at Whitsuntide. Webber threw John Dyer, after some good play. Chapman now met Gill, and, after considerable play, Gill came to his back. Lucas threw Foster. Webber threw Toogood. Snell odd man. Third round, Snell threw Webber.
Chapman refusing to play for second prize, they were awarded thus: Snell, 1st prize, 6 sovs (Devon); Webber, 2nd ditto, 3 sovs (Devon); Chapman, 3rd ditto, 1 sov (Cornwall). The double players receiving 3s. each. The sports finished with satisfaction to all parties.
