The Era, Brecknock Arms wrestling: Jeffery of Cornwall wins (1848)
CORNWALL AND DEVONSHIRE WRESTLING. BRECKNOCK ARMS, CAMDEN TOWN. The sports began by Verron, of Birmingham, who threw C. Retford, of Devon, twice. Jeffery, a new arrival from Cornwall, then downed D. Radford (D.) in superior style. Trimblett (D.) and Paul (Somerset) played two spirited bouts, Trimblett finally hiping Paul in consummate style.
TUESDAY. Ayres (D.) soon downed Flanagan (I.) with the inner lock, which he repeated by the back heel. Bartlett (C.) and Gifford, two fine players, consumed forty-five minutes in exhausting manoeuvres, which closed by Bartlett flooring Gifford by a splendid heave.
WEDNESDAY. The next pair was Jeffery and Bartlett, both well-known good men from Cornwall; some splendid play distinguished this bout, each gaining a fall, after which Jeffery pitched his man with his left-lock flat on his back. Jeffery and Trimlett first entered for the final, the latter appearing to have the best of his man for half an hour, when the superior science of the Cornish man was evidently seen, for he quickly downed the Devonshire man, first catching him with the lock, and then cross buttocking him twice in a few minutes.
Jeffery, of Cornwall, winning the first prize of £6; Thomas of Birmingham, the second prize of £4; Verron, of Birmingham, the third prize of £2. At Whitsuntide the Annual Subscription Match for £100 will be played for at the Brecknock Arms.
