Western Times, Leeds wrestling arrangements (1828)
WRESTLING. The following are the arrangements agreed upon during the past week for the great wrestling match, at Haigh Park, near Leeds, on Easter Tuesday and two following days. The wrestling games to commence the day after the Races, and to be continued for three days. The play to be hand to collar, fair back falls, light shoes, and padding to be worn, if approved by the parties. The prizes: best man £30, second £20, third £15, fourth £10, fifth £7, sixth £5; every double player to receive one sovereign. Ten picked men from London, and the same number from Devonshire, including the champion Abraham Cann, are to be conveyed to the place appointed, maintained during the whole of the time, and sent back to their homes free of all expense, besides their chance of winning prizes.
