Exeter Flying Post, Okehampton and Honiton wrestling reports (1826)

WRESTLING.—The Okehampton Grand Match commenced on the 16th inst. Twenty four men got share, and the double play brought with it some of the richest turns that have ever been witnessed; the men all fresh from their native hills displayed a strength and vigor almost superhuman, as they were stripped they seemed very Atlases. Woolaway who was considered much improved in condition and play, had the first prize of 8 sovs.; J. Drascombe the second of 4 sovs., and Jury the third of 2 sovs.

The Honiton Match commenced at the Baker’s Inn, on Thursday 17th inst. James Cann proved himself still worthy to be accounted the brother of the Champion. Wreford threw his opponent a most tremendous fall, gaining the first prize of 5 sovs.; Toogood, of Buckerell, the second, and E. Markes, of Feniton, the third.
