Gloucester Journal, “Notice to all Gentlemen Gamesters” (1742)
THIS is to give Notice to all Gentlemen Gamesters, and Others,
THAT there will be Three HATS, of Three Guineas Price, the free Gift of Abraham Golding and Robert Hobbs, at St. John’s-Bridge in Gloucestershire; One Hat, on Monday the 6th of September next, to be play’d for at Back-sword, by Five or Seven of a Side, according as the Gamesters shall agree: To appear by One o’Clock in the Afternoon.
On the next Day, one Hat to be run for by Men in Sacks, the best of three Heats; to pay 6d. Entrance, and to enter by Nine o’Clock in the Forenoon, and start at Eleven; to run the Course of two Furlongs, and no less than three to start. — The same Day, one Hat to be wrestled for by Seven on a Side, three Foils, or a fair Fall; To appear by Three o’Clock in the Afternoon.
