  • Parkyns Practical instructions

A copy of the 1727 edition is currently in the collection of thhe Cornish Wrestling Association (CWA).

This is core material for the DWS. We have an authoritative edition of Cornish Wrestling manual known as “Progymnastmata: In-play or the Cornish hug wrestler”, published in 4 editions of Sir Thomas Parkyns’ original work (1713, 1714, 1727, 1800).

This is an accessible edition of the original text. We have added copious notes and translations of Latin references to aide the modern reader to understand the 18th century language and idiosyncracies. We have also retraced the original illustrations from the fold-out and included them within the main body of the work to make understanding the techniques easier.
