London Observer, Devonshire style and the single stick (1837)

The wrestling in the Devonshire style and the single stick announced to take place on Monday, June 26, and two following days, at the Royal Standard, near the City-road, promises te afford much excellent sport.

Several first-rate men have already entered their names as competitors for the prizes; and should Chapell & Collins come from Devon, the contest will excite great interest.

The Devonshire wrestling a single stick in the Eyre Arms, St. John’s-wood, on Monday, was a miserable exhibition.

The two Archers, the two Dyers, and several others entered the ring; but, with few exceptions, the bouts were indifferently contested. Archer, sen, was declared the victor of the day. Blackford and Davies went in to play at single stick for a few shillings collected on the ground. After several slashing rounds the blood oozed from the mouth of Davies, and Blackford ran out of the ring declaring himself the winner, but, in consequence of his endeavouring to avoid the spectators, a suspicion arose that he had receive. ln a blow, which proved to be the fact; for, notwithstanding the old ‘un tried several artful dodges to keep his proboscis from view, the crimson gore was seen to trickle down his nasal organ in torrents As both had shown blood the money was divided. Simon Stone and Stacey were on the ground, but did not contend.
